"Here Comes the Cowboy" by Mac DeMarco

Mac DeMarco has become somewhat of a mythical hipster icon over the past couple of years. His mixture of wavy synth undertones, ultra dry drums and dreamy guitar tones gave his music a smooth and hypnotic quality that's endured this current drought of guitar fronted music and made his sound unmistakably his own. Mac's music typically felt like an acid trip on the beach with your best friend. "Here Comes the Cowboy" feels like the day after - when you're both too groggy to really do anything but can't really sleep all day either. Some have even go so far as to express concern over Mac's mental state based on how exhausted Mac sounds on this record. But to me, it just came off as bored. He's throwing in random gong hits and stretching the tiniest nuggets of song ideas way past their welcome. The epitome of this record's aimless meandering and redundancy has to be "Choo Choo", which is pretty much exactly what you're imagining it is when you read the song title. Hopefully this is just a momentary stumble while Mac figures out where to go after the monster success of "This Old Dog" but for now, I'd say we'd all be better off pretending this never happened.
