Top 10 Movies That Should Receive Video Game Adaptations

Recently we tackled the Top 10 video games that should be adapted into feature films but with the release of Predator: Hunting Grounds, we started thinking about the flip side of that coin and which films would be best suited to receive the video game treatment. I get some of these have already been tackled but I'm talking about something a little more substantive than the Robocop NES game here, alright?

#10. Planet Terror

We really haven't had too many horror franchises in the gaming world as of late and the arcadey carnage that could unfold in the zombie infested, Grindhouse world of Planet Terror would make for the perfect sandbox to play in. Over the top gore, outrageous characters and a killer retro soundtrack (maybe Carpenter Brut?) would make this the perfect throwback shoot em up.

#9. Terminator

One of the coolest visuals from James Cameron's original Terminator films were the brief glimpses of the future wars against the machines. And since no one can seem to figure out how to continue the Terminator series on the big screen, why not let fans dive into those laser filled battlefields in a first person shooter, trying to fight for humanity alongside John Conner and Kyle Reese in the impending machine lead apocalypse?

#8. Heat

We don't need to drag in all of the details of Pacino's failed marriage, a suicidal teenage Natalie Portman or hood snitch Tone Loc; but a high stakes cops and robbers heist game where you can choose to work from either side of the law sounds like a blast. Especially getting to form a crew online to either pull off or counter massive scores.

#7. Die Hard

Even though most modern movie to video game adaptations have grown past copying the exact storyline from the films they're based on, I'd be all in on Die Hard getting the same treatment Rockstar gave The Warriors back on Playstation 2. Having to sneak around Nakitomi Plaza, cutting it up on the walkie talkie with Al and blasting through terrorists on Christmas Eve would absolutely be worth reliving in an interactive HD remaster.

#6. Mission Impossible

Tom Cruise can't keep doing this forever, can he? What better way to carry on with the franchise than by moving to electronic incarnations of the IMF team and their increasingly impossible missions. Getting to perform the insane stunts the franchise is notorious for in an Uncharted-like platform adventure would be a great way for the series to live on in the interim until we can find someone a little more exciting than Jeremy Renner to take over for Cruise.

#5. Sin City

The uber-stylized world of Frank Miller brought to life in an open world anthology series with alternating lead characters and brand new stories would be amazing. Toss in some series favorites like that Yellow Bastard, Nancy and Marv with over the top Devil May Cry style action and a slick noire soundtrack and you're absolutely set. It'd be like L.A. Noire, but actually fun and stylish.

#4. Escape From New York

Hang-gliding your way into a post-apocalyptic New York City to rescue the president from a gang of radicalized prisoners as Snake Plisken sounds like a much better way to relive the the glory of the original film than a predictable remake. Hell, you could even do a DLC add-on with the Escape from L.A. map and story. Add an online mele mode where the first person to find and escape with the president wins and you've got a helluva Fortnite counterpart on your hands.

#3. Indiana Jones

Honestly, it makes way more sense for Indiana Jones to find a second life in video games than it does for Uncharted to find a second life in movies. So why not flip the script on Naughty Dog and give us some new adventures of Indiana Jones that are a lot more plausible than an 80 year old Harrison Ford trying to outrun...well anything. And with Indy now under Disney's domain, it's probably only a matter of time before they start mining the franchise for potential money makers anyways. Let's just hope someone other than EA develops it.

#2. Robocop

Take the open world setting of a Grand Theft Auto, drop it in the dystopian Detroit seen in the Robocop franchise and give it the crime fighting initiatives of last year's Spider-Man game and I think you've got one hell of an interactive experience. Countless opportunities for free roam crime stopping, outrageous violence, and social commentary galore - Robocop seems absolutely ripe for a modern day video game adaptation. Just give him the design of the og, not that awful remake.

#1. Last Action Hero

The criminally underrated Shane Black vehicle, originally designed for Arnold Schwarzenegger to ride off into the sunset, was a bit of a flop when it was released but honestly it's one of his best films. And using the premise of being able to hop into different films with a magical movie ticket and having a murderer's row of fictional characters escape from their respective films would lead to countless possibilities (given you've got a big enough bankroll to clear all the copyrights). It would make for a massive world building experience with endless opportunities to integrate new environments and characters that the source film may have failed to fully capitalize on. Think Kingdom Hearts but for self-respecting adults.
